Rules-Based Trading Plan

About the Blog

Rules-Based Trading Plan

In this new blog series, Frantz will go step by step through the process of using post-trade analysis to create a rules-based trading plan.

Lessons From Trading (Mistakes) – Blog posts in 2019

Even veteran investors make mistakes. Private investor, Frantz Herr, presents examples of mistakes he has made in order to help pinpoint bad tendencies and work on correcting them.  His mistakes may help you recognize similar issues in your own trading or reinforce those things you are doing right. These are all actual trades.

Frantz Herr

Frantz Herr is a private investor and writer of the blogs, Rules-Based Trading Plan and Lessons from Trading (Mistakes) and co-host of the vlog, Anatomy of a Trade.  Frantz coaches members of the Wyckoff Trading Process Group and was a presenter at the Best of Wyckoff 2021 Online Conference. Frantz bought his first stock in 1974 and has had a deep passion for investing most of his life. He retired from Merrill Lynch in 2017 after serving clients as a financial advisor for 32 years. He is now focused on managing his family’s portfolio.

Frantz has gone through numerous bull and bear markets in various asset classes during his investing life. Over the years he has narrowed his areas of investing interest and spends most of his time today thinking about two markets. He is a disciple of the William O’Neil CANSLIM methodology for growth stocks; and he tracks the market for gold and gold mining stocks. In 2016 he began to educate himself about Richard D. Wyckoff, and in 2018 became a client of Wyckoff Analytics. He has taken WTC Part I, WTC Part II (formerly Practicum), and a variety of Wyckoff Analytics’ special topic courses including the Wyckoff Trading Process Group and is a regular participant on the Wyckoff Market Discussion.

This next trade is an example of correct analysis but bad trade execution.  Getting the bias, timing and character right and then failing to fully capitalize on the opportunity is aggravating.  This trade is an example of letting emotion, rather than rules, make decisions.  The answer is to ... EDIT - Don't Buy the Hype

In fairness to myself, this trade was taken before my introduction to Wyckoff Analytics.  It is an example of the misapplication of two trading axioms 1) buy as a stock breaks out to new highs and 2) buy high relative strength.  I adhered to both of these, and top-ticked the stock – as a ... NR - Impatience

I bought a number of energy stocks in mid-2018, and NR is an example of numerous mistakes with these trades.  My impatience and cognitive bias were the root cause.

The first chart is the weekly chart of the action in the stock for some perspective.  The second zone of consolidation had ... READ MORE

Do not focus on unpromising candidates because I think I am familiar with them.  Always look for the best possible setups.
