Richard Wyckoff, considered to be one of the “titans of technical analysis,” developed a trading and investing method based on what he called “the real rules of the game,” which he learned from observing the market activities of such legendary stock traders as JP Morgan and Jesse Livermore.  Wyckoff saw how the large operators carefully planned and executed their campaigns and later integrated their best practices with his own original insights, creating a chart-based method to track and trade in harmony with the big money (embodied today by the largest investment banks, hedge funds and pension plans, among others).

Wyckoff’s approach is particularly relevant to IBD subscribers. According to two of William J. O’Neil’s former portfolio managers, “We have observed that a meaningful portion of the O’Neil ‘body of thought’ is derived from the philosophies of those who preceded him, particularly the works of Richard Wyckoff and Jesse Livermore…you can never entirely understand Bill O’Neil until you have…understood these two gentlemen.” IBD readers who attend the free presentation will recognize that the “M” in CANSLIM incorporates several fundamental technical insights in the Wyckoff Method.

The Price/Volume/Time analytical approach of the Wyckoff Method provides chart-reading tools to help traders recognize and take advantage of specific institutional market activities, which in turn can enhance their ability to identify high-probability trading opportunities.

On December 16, 2024, we identified notable patterns in $UPST, displaying classic characteristics of a buying climax and upthrust action.

Our analysis of $BTC’s concerning volume characteristics also proved accurate. The subsequent price action validated our concerns, as Bitcoin experienced a sharp decline following our observation, demonstrating how volume analysis can serve as a leading indicator for price movement.
The dramatic move lower reinforced the importance of monitoring volume characteristics at key price levels.

These real-world examples underscore the reliability of the Wyckoff Method in today’s markets. By carefully analyzing price action, volume, and market structure, traders can identify high-probability trading opportunities and potential market turning points across any financial instrument.

Alessio Rutigliano – Instructor of the Wyckoff Trading Course and host of the Wyckoff Crypto Lab

Alessio Rutigliano’s first encounter with the Wyckoff Method was Henry O. Pruden’s The Three Skills of Top Trading. He is a holder of the Henry O. Pruden Certificate of Proficiency in the Wyckoff Method and serves as an instructor at Wyckoff Analytics.
